Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit brochure
At Mount Alvernia Hospital, we have a dedicated Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU) which provides special care for newborns should they require a little
help during the early days. Here, babies are nursed under radiant warmers to
keep warm and for close observation. We have precision equipment to monitor
baby’s heartbeat, breathing rate and oxygen intake.
Kangaroo Care
Kangaroo care is the practice of giving babies skin-to-skin
contact with their parents, enabling them to share warmth and natural closeness.
It was developed in Bogota, Columbia and has been used successfully in South
America, Europe and the United States.
At Mount Alvernia Hospital, we are dedicated to meeting your
needs as parents and advocate Kangaroo Care as we believe it benefits our
patients and is good for babies.
Benefits of Kangaroo Care
-
Kangaroo Care is good for any
baby but for premature babies, it can be especially helpful to
the baby’s growth and development
-
Kangaroo Care helps premature
babies grow faster, leave their incubators sooner and achieve
deeper, more restful sleep. Premature babies given
Kangaroo Care benefit from weight gain and can sleep better for
longer.
-
At Mount Alvernia Hospital,
many of our mothers were pleasantly surprised to find that they
could bring their babies home 2 weeks before the expected
discharge date. In this way, Kangaroo Care helps shorten the
hospital stay and effectively reduces the hospital bill.
-
Breastfeeding mothers who
practise Kangaroo Care generally produce more milk.
-
Kangaroo Care provides parents
whose premature babies are in the NICU with an opportunity to
ease the ache of separation and lessen physical barriers such as
the plastic walls of the incubator and connections to medical
equipment.
Our services are available to both babies born at Mount Alvernia
and from other hospitals.
