The Diagnostic Imaging Department provides
physicians with advanced diagnostic modalities and therapeutic procedures to
aid in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of diseases. These procedures minimize
the need for invasive surgery. The services available are:
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) - Provides
clear and detailed images of the bones, internal organs and tissues using radio
frequency waves with a strong magnetic field. Blood vessels of the head and
body can also be seen clearly with this latest technology.
Ultrasound
Scan – High definition ultrasound scanning for all organs including
obstetric scans, and high resolution detailed colour and Doppler imaging.
Computed Tomography Scan (CT Scan) - The
high speed 64 slice MDCT scanner enables visualisation of coronary vessels and
detailed studies of the abdomen, the head and the trunk. Screening colonography
studies can also be performed.
Mammography - Screening and diagnosis for
breast cancer. Digitalised stereotatic localisation of micro calcification with
biopsy and mammotome removal of breast lesions.
Digital fluoroscopy and computer radiography like barium meals,
enemas and other specialised x-ray and plain x-ray.
Angiography - Angiographic studies allow for
both diagnostic and therapeutic work to be performed on the cardiac or coronary
blood vessels, vessels of the brain and vessels of the body including the limbs.
Examples are angioplasty, stenting, embolisation and thrombolysis. In addition,
venous procedures are also offered and this includes the setting of peripheral,
tunnelled lines and ports, venous angioplasty and stenting for Superior Vena
Cava occlusion and Inferior Vena Cava filter insertion. There are also facilities
for venous ablation for treatment of varicose veins.
Interventional Radiology - This is field where
imaging is used as a tool to target and effect treatment. With real time CT
fluoroscopy, it is possible to target lung lesions less than 1 cm in size. Liver
lesion may also be targeted under real-time ultrasound guidance for biopsy or
ablative therapy. There is also ability to remove fluid in the pleural or peritoneal
cavities, cross and stent ureteric, biliary or enteric obstructions through
a small puncture in the skin.
In addition, services for vertebroplasty to treat painful
spinal fractures and other neural blocks and biopsy for various musculo-skeletal
problems are also available.
Bone Densitometer - An accurate tool in detecting
osteoporosis. This is a whole body densitometer with options to examine other
parts of the skeleton as well. Recommended for all menopausal women or patients
with major risk factors for osteoporosis.
Lithotripsy - High powered lithotripter,
capable of fragmenting stones in the kidneys and the urinary tract. This eliminates
the need for open surgery and general anaesthesia. Treatment for certain orthopaedic/sports
injury conditions is possible with this lithotripter - ESWT (Extracorporeal
Shock Wave Therapy).
Urodynamics study – Analysis of the
behaviour of the lower urinary tract and the bladder. The ability to correlate
clinical symptoms to bladder behaviour allows precise diagnosis and hence better
treatment results.
Newborn Hearing Screening Program - Using
the most efficient and reliable AABR (Automated Auditory Brainstem-evoked Response)
method for performing the hearing screens. It is a simple safe hearing screen
for all newborn babies, for early detection and treatment of hearing impairment.
